Makaton

Makaton

Makaton is a language programme that uses signs, symbols, and speech to support communication. It is designed to help children develop their understanding of language and express themselves more confidently. Makaton can be beneficial for all children and is particularly useful for those with speech, language, and communication needs.

At our school, Makaton is used to support communication across a range of activities and routines. By using signs alongside spoken language, children are given additional visual support to help them understand and remember key words and concepts. This can increase confidence, reduce frustration, and encourage participation in learning and social interactions.

Makaton is used throughout the school day by trained staff and is integrated into lessons, group activities, and everyday communication. We also introduce a ‘Sign of the Week’ to help children, staff, and families learn and practise new signs together, creating a more inclusive and communication-friendly environment for everyone.

If you would like to discuss Makaton and how this can support your child, please contact Mrs Wears (our Speech, Language and Communication Lead) and she will be able to support you.
