West View Pupil Groups

We are very proud of the range of pupil leadership groups that we offer. They are all working together to help improve different aspects of our school. These groups give children a voice in important decisions that affect their school, as well as opportunities to work on projects, including fundraising and awareness campaigns across the school as a whole.

Arts Council

Our newly formed Arts Council is set to be a driving force for raising the profile of art at West View Primary School. Armed with passion for the subject, determination and ideas aplenty, they aim to ensure that art is not only accessible but enjoyed by all within our school and the wider community.

Each class, from Year 1 to Year 6, is represented by an ‘Art Ambassador’ who was elected by their peers. These ambassadors remain in role as they move through school, allowing them time to complete projects and truly demonstrate their impact.

The Arts Council meet regularly to plan and discuss new ideas, work on existing projects and share views from their classes

Digital Leaders

At West View Primary School, our Digital Leaders represent the voice of our pupils when it comes to all things in the ever-evolving online world. Each class, from Years 1 to Year 6, has one elected Digital Leader who represents their peers and is responsible for the safe use of technology within their classroom.

During meetings, Digital Leaders share concerns and bring ideas from their classmates, which help to shape the computing curriculum across school and how children at West View access technology to assist their learning. Digital Leaders also play an important role in safeguarding at West View as they attend meetings with the Safeguarding Team and Local Governors to ensure that our school community are staying safe online.

Eco Council

At West View Primary School, the Eco Council represents the voice of our children in caring for the environment. They work hard to make a positive difference within school and across the wider community by promoting sustainability and looking after our planet.

Each class, from Reception to Year 6, has one elected Eco Councillor who represents their peers. Councillors remain in their role as they move through school, building on their knowledge and experience year after year.

The Eco Council meets regularly, following a structured and focused agenda. During these meetings, councillors bring forward ideas, share concerns raised by classmates and discuss plans for eco-friendly projects. They also take part in making important decisions to help the school become more sustainable and play an active role in organising environmental campaigns and fundraising events.

As well as making changes in school, our Eco Councillors work with the local community — for example, helping to care for the community garden at West View Advice and Resource Centre. This gives them the chance to make a real difference beyond the school and to share their ideas for protecting the environment with others.

Happiness Heroes

The role of our Happiness Heroes pupil group is to spread happiness around school and support others with their wellbeing through techniques such as Happy Breathing. These children in Years 1-6 also promote the use of the myHappymind programme across our school.

As well as work within school, the aim of our Happiness Heroes is to spread happiness and joy around our local community. This includes happiness walks and collecting and donating to local charities.

Opal Play Leaders

At West View Primary School, the OPAL (Outdoor Play and Learning) programme is central to creating a rich, active and inclusive play environment for all children.

A key part of this success is the role of the Play Leaders – a group of children who take responsibility for supporting the school’s play provision. Play Leaders play an active role in assemblies, helping to explain the importance of play and sharing new ideas with the wider school community. They also contribute beyond playtimes by supporting after-school clubs that help to build and maintain play resources, as well as working with the local community to gather donations and materials.

During playtimes, Play Leaders act as role models, encouraging inclusive play, helping other children to access resources and supporting positive behaviour. Their leadership fosters teamwork, creativity and responsibility, making play at West View Primary both enjoyable and meaningful for everyone.

Reading Ambassadors

At West View Primary School, our Reading Ambassadors are a pupil leadership group designed to promote a love of reading across the school community. Ambassadors act as reading role models, encouraging others to engage with books, develop literacy skills and foster a love of reading. Reading Ambassadors are elected via an application process and include children from both Year 5 and Year 6. Once elected, Reading Ambassadors have regular meetings throughout the school week.

The role of the Reading Ambassador is varied and includes, but is not limited to, running our lunchtime library, curating books across school, creating vibrant reading displays, reading to younger children, rewarding home reading, igniting a passion for reading across school and running an after-school club linked to reading and crafts.

Safeguarding Council

The aim of West View Primary School’s newly formed Safeguarding Council is to give children a voice in helping keep their school community reading, respectful and safe.

Made up of one representative from each class from Reception to Year 6, the council allows pupils to share their views, raise concerns, and work alongside staff to promote the wellbeing of everyone in the school and also in their local community.

The Safeguarding Council meets regularly and takes part in meetings with the wider staff Safeguarding Team to discuss any concerns and explore ways to make the school a safe and welcoming place for everyone.

They also engage with the termly themes set out by the Hartlepool and Stockton Safeguarding Children Partnership (HSSCP) – Hartlepool and Stockton-on – Tees Safeguarding Children Partnership(HSSCP) – School Safeguarding Councils
